This man was selling coconuts in Phuket Town:

Tattoo

He didn't speak any English and had no way of telling me what those tattoos on his chest mean. My guess is that he was a soldier who fought in the anti-communist campaigns of the 1960's. To this day, tattoos with Buddhist inscriptions are worn by many Thai soldiers as a way to protect them from harm.

Longinus

This traditional street play runs the entire length of Holy Week, starting from around 9PM and lasting until past midnight.
Kristo

Lucban, Quezon: A traditional carroza awaits the upcoming Good Friday procession.

Paete, Laguna: male residents of this riverside town gather to carry the santo entierro - the  statue of the dead Christ - on their shoulders. Curiously, the image is made to sway from side to side as the procession winds its way down the streets.

Pakil, Laguna: His panghataw red with blood oozing from his cut back, a male penitent whips himself before the centuries-old San Pedro de Alcantara Church. A ski mask is worn over his head to preserve his anonymity, and around his waist is a ladies' "skirt" made from palm fronds - a humiliating play on the Filipino male's macho sensibilities.
